ARTIST STATEMENT
Gardens are colorful, hopeful and teeming with life. I want to bring the outside in with my art. Nature gives me endless inspiration. For me the green of plants symbolizes growth.
Botanical subject matter inspires me paired with the thrill of creating something that does not yet exist. I cannot resist this invitation of possibility. I work outdoors as much as the weather allows, observing and connecting with the natural world.
And so I paint with wonder and amazement all the things that please my eyes. I leave the political statements to politicians. I’m in full agreement with Matisse who said “What I dream of is an art of balance of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter…..a soothing, calming influence on the mind….” Notes from a Painter (1908).
Watercolor paints are small and portable, they allow me to slip into the landscape. This is why I love them. I also enjoy oils for their saturated rich colors. When I paint en plein air, I am no longer an observer, I am part of nature. Painting for hours in the shade of a tree feeds my soul.
